With a BA in education and ten years of experience in publishing, Louise Bourbonnais turned her attention to medical librarianship. She worked at the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (IUGM) for 19 years. It was there that she met speech language therapist Michelyne Hubert, the main founder of the AQPA, who suggested that she hire Maurice Dancause, a person with aphasia, to work in her department. He worked there for 25 years.
After retiring from the IUGM in 2008, she took over as director of the Quebec Association for People with Aphasia in March 2010 at the invitation of Michelyne Hubert, a position she held until December 2015. With the support of the AQPA board of directors, she created the Aphasia House Foundation in 2013, which she has been running on a voluntary basis since 2016.
