The Foundation is committed to bringing together people with aphasia and modest incomes in the same home, so that they can break out of isolation and enjoy shared services tailored to their needs.
Although the Convergence Griffintown project, launched in 2018, did not come to fruition due to a lack of funding, the AHF believes that the conditions for a real estate project for people with aphasia will soon be met. The Mainbourg Corporation, a social economy enterprise that owns and manages community-oriented buildings, supports our hopes. A decision by its board of directors in October 2024 validated their collaboration with the foundation. In January 2025, the AHF therefore created an independent corporation, the House of Aphasia whose main objective is to provide assistance and support to people with aphasia, and more specifically to promote access to housing that meets their needs.
Study by Adalie Le Nguyen, supervised by Guylaine Le Dorze
Adalie Le Nguyen, a student at the University of Montreal, is devoting her master's thesis in speech therapy to surveying people with aphasia in the AQPA about their needs and desires with regard to a home dedicated to them. More than 30 participants were interviewed. A summary of this research is published online in the journal Aphasiology. For her part, Executive Director Louise Bourbonnais gathered the opinions of caregivers on the urgency of living in an aphasia house. There is no doubt about the merits of this project.
Engaging with the community, supporting promising initiatives, whatever they may be and without judgment, accompanying individuals and groups who dream big and want to build the city of tomorrow—this is what drives the Rayside Labossière team and makes them unique.
Corporation Mainbourg's board of directors understood the project's goal of providing people with aphasia with an environment suited to their needs. Two buildings are to be constructed, one in Pointe-aux-Trembles-Rivière-des-Prairies and the other in Longueuil, in which some 40 units will be reserved for people with aphasia. However, like all non-profit housing organizations, the Mainbourg Corporation is subject to the availability of funding, whether from cities or the government. The AHF hopes that funding will soon be available! Corporation Mainbourg.
